Nov. 19, 2009 -- Get Ready for the Weird Spiel on Dec. 6!

The first half of our season is drawing to a close.  Make sure to get your strange, crazy, abnormal and odd costumes ready for our Weird Spiel on December 6. The format will be similar to that used last season. When you arrive, you will draw a colored ‘stone’ which will determine the rink you will play on. We will have a round robin draw using 2 end games to determine a bonspiel winner. After curling, you are all invited to a restaurant for Brunch.  The crazier your costume the better.  Who knows, we might even have a little something for the winning team!

Aug. 30, 2009 -- Curling Resumes Sept. 13th

As done in the past, we will have a couple of special sessions to kick off the season:

  • Sunday, Sept. 13 – Intermediate Education session for experienced curlers
  • Sunday, Sept. 20 – Learn to Curl session for new members.

The Intermediate Education session is designed for people with some curling experience. This will feature our skips and experienced members who will discuss & demonstrate topics and questions related to delivery, sweeping and strategy. The purpose of this education is to address specific areas that you want to improve or that you have had trouble with. Please email topics or questions you have to Wayne Garman so that we can better prepare the instruction. This was a very popular session last season, and I encourage everyone to attend. The fee for this will be $20.00 per person.

The Learn to Curl session is our method to introduce the sport to new persons. This is our major recruiting session for new members, so please publicize this to anyone you know who is interested in curling. We will go through the basics of delivery and sweeping, and time permitting, run through a mini curling game. We will also need a few volunteers to assist with the instruction. There will be no charge for people to attend this session, although we will ask for donations to help offset the ice fees.

Aug. 30, 2009 -- Announcing the LSCC Pro Shop

Wouldn't it be great if all of Austin knew about the Lone Star Curling Club?  Well, now is your opportunity to spread the word.  We have been hard at work this summer designing a new LSCC logo for club t-shirts, and car window decals. These items will be available for sale starting Sept. 13th, our first week of curling.  Show your support for  and help spread the word about the LSCC.  Stayed tuned for updates on prices for these great LSCC pro shop items.  A very special thanks to Darlene for all of your hard work in setting up and running the new LSCC Pro Shop!

July 5, 2009 -- We're on Summer Break!

Even though we aren't on the ice right now, our board members are hard at work to make sure we have a great season starting in September.  We are currently planning an intermediate education session and a learn to curl session to start off our season.  We want to fill all 4 sheets this season, so spread the word and tell your friends to come give curling a try.  2010 is an Olympic year, let's get all of Austin excited about trying an Olympic sport.

Congratulations to all of the LSCC members who went to the Texas Open Bonspiel in April.  The LSCC had a great showing this year, we had 3 teams competing.  Team Garman placed 4th overall and Team Newgord won the "B" event.  Thanks to the Houston Curling Club for hosting a great event, especially with some awful weather conditions.

Aug. 21, 2008 -- Intermediate Curling Education Session

Hard as it is to believe, September is almost here, and with it the start of the 2008/2009 curling season for the Lone Star Curling Club. Can you believe that our club is embarking on its third season !!!

As part of this season’s startup, we are going to hold an intermediate curling education session. This will be held on Sunday, Sept. 7, from 9:30 AM to 11:45 AM at the Northcross Mall ice facility. This will be a chance to reconnect with everyone, and to brush up on your curling skills.

A number of our experienced ( and in a few cases older ) members have volunteered to help with the training. This session is designed for people who have some experience with curling, and are interested in upgrading their curling skills or addressing curling problems they have found.

The training will be organized into centers, including:

  • Delivery
  • Sweeping
  • House strategy

You will be able to rotate through any or all of the centers during the session, as they will be fairly informal.

To help us prepare for this education, we would like know the areas where you need coaching. Examples could include:

  • I am having trouble consistently hitting the broom
  • How can I get more weight on my shots
  • I keep falling over when I slide out
  • I have trouble keeping up with the rock & sweeping
  • How can I determine the best turn to call for a shot

Please let me know by email ( president@lonestarcurlingclub.org ) if you plan to attend, and what areas are of interest to you.

The cost for the session will be $20.00 per curler. Please plan on arriving around 9:00 AM to help with the ice setup.

We look forward to seeing everyone there.

Aug. 16, 2008 -- August Curling Session Canceled!

Please note that the August 24th special curling session has been canceled.  We have decided to cancel this event primarily due to poor ice conditions caused by warm rocks.  We'll be back on the ice for the start of our regular season curling Sept. 7th.

Aug. 16, 2008 -- Regular Season Curling Begins Sept. 7th

Mark your calendars for the start of our regular season curling.  Our first session will be September 7th from 9:30 a.m. to Noon.  This will be an "Intermediate Education" session.  Come on out Sunday Sept. 7th to tune up your curling skills, maybe learn a few new tricks and get ready for league play.  We are looking forward to another great season!

July 6, 2008 -- Announcing Special Summer Curling Sessions

The LSCC will hold two special summer curling sessions - July 20th and August 24th. These sessions will be at our usual Sunday morning time (9:45 - 11:45 a.m.) and cost ($20/session). We will have one sheet dedicated to a skills challenge and a second sheet dedicated to a pick-up game. The other two sheets will be used for either additional games or skills challenges depending on demand. Some of the shots that we will be practicing in the skills challenge include:

  • draw to just in front of house
  • guard shot
  • raze
  • take out
  • promotion
  • double take out
  • draw in around guard

We hope that everyone can come out for a little cool down from the heat and get in a little extra practice before we start our fall league.

This is also a great opportunity to introduce the sport of curling to any newcomers, so bring your friends, family, co-workers, even that nice guy that serves you coffee in the mornings!

Mark your calendars for some curling fun July 20th and August 24th!

April 5, 2008 -- No Curling April 6th!!

Chaparral Ice still isn't ready for us!  They are not ready for us to move our rocks to the new rink yet.  Hopefully, this will happen sometime this next week and we'll be back on the ice soon.

The Texas Open Bonspiel in Dallas is the weekend of April 12-13, and many of our club members will be participating. This means our first day of curling on the new rink will be Sunday April 20th at the usual time. Don't miss this date to come out and see the new rink with REAL HOUSES, HOG LINES, T-LINES and even CENTER LINES.

Please note that the membership meeting scheduled to follow curling April 6th will be rescheduled.  Stay tuned to the website and email for more updates on when we'll be back on the ice!

March 29, 2008 -- Photos of the New Rink

We have some great pictures of Dennis, Bill, Wayne and Ramona laying the houses and lines in the new rink.  We also have some fantastic shots of the finished product.  Check out our Photo Gallery for these pictures.

A special thanks to Wayne and Alex for taking and sharing these pictures.
